![]() Kippenberger had died in Vienna on the evening of March 7th. But in Spring this year another piece of news came through. The Kippenberger organisation seemed to be thundering into action all over Europe: it was like an ambush. Preparations for building another entrance to his world-wide 'Metro Net' started in Leipzig, and finally it was announced that he had won the Käthe Kollwitz Prize, which led to another exhibition, at the Akademie der Kunste in Berlin. Things remained quiet into the first half of 1996, but that autumn, exhibition announcements came in thick and fast, from museums in Copenhagen, Esslingen, Mönchengladbach, Geneva, as well as numerous commercial galleries. He even built a raft that he experimented on to figure out what it was like to be at the mercy of the waves.Two years ago, very little was heard of Martin Kippenberger. ![]() Painted shortly after the defeat of Waterloo, the masterpiece was immediately recognized as the symbol of a defeated and drifting France, which is why it aroused such strong emotions.įUN FACT: to realistically paint the tormented bodies of the dead or dying shipwrecked, Géricault carried out real-life studies in a hospital, without hesitating on the more macabre details. When they were finally spotted and taken to safety, only twelve of the shipwrecked were still alive. 149 sailors managed to climb onto a raft that they then drifted on for thirteen days. It depicts an actual piece of news from 1816, when the frigate "Medusa" was wrecked in the Atlantic on its way between France and Senegal.
